If you're a word nerd, you've probably heard of Wordle, the word guessing game that has taken the Internet by storm and amassed millions of daily users in only three months. If you're a bird fanatic as well as a word nerd, there's a game for you. Alex Tomlinson, an Audubon graphic designer, created BRDL, a game that tests players' ability to decipher four-letter banding codes that scientists use as a shorthand for species names (like MODO for mourning dove or GREG for great egret).
The game has grown in popularity, giving rise to a British birders-only variant that employs different codes. "It's truly unbelievable!" Tomlinson told Audubon. "I had no idea such a specialized thing would be so popular," says the author.
