Nerdle

What exactly is Nerdle?

Nerdle was inspired by the popular word puzzle game Wordle. Following the success of Josh Wardle's Wordle in 2021, a group of like-minded people (identified on the site as Richard and Imogen Mann, Marcus, Gavin, and Alex) decided to create a math puzzle game. Nerdle, which debuted in 2022, stepped in to fill a void for puzzle fans who felt left out by Wordle's focus.

You, like Wordle, try to find the correct "term" every day. However, in this game, the term refers to a mathematically correct equation. Each tile can have a number or a mathematical symbol on it. Green tiles indicate that you have correctly placed the correct number or symbol. The presence of a purple tile indicates that you have the correct number or symbol, but it must be placed somewhere else in the sequence.

Nerdle Instructions

Although it focuses on numbers rather than letters, Wordle users should recognize the basic concept. Like The New York Times' game, you have six chances to guess the answer of the day. Once you've submitted your first attempt, a series of color-coded hints will tell you how close you were.

Characters that do not appear in the sum at all will be shown in black, while those that do appear in the sum but in the wrong place will be shown in red. Finally, any numbers or signs that you got exactly right turn green. Returning to the puzzle with the information from your previous guess, you continue until you either find the solution or run out of tries.

Nerdle, like Wordle, provides you with six guesses to solve the equation. Don't give up if you can't solve the puzzle on the first try. This game is unquestionably perfect for math nerds.
